The Norwegian island of Svalbard, located between Greenland and Norway, is home to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, the largest secure seed storage in the world. Opened by the Norwegian government in 2008, the 10,764 square foot vault is buried into the island's permafrost with only the concrete entrance visible to the outside world. Only scientists and staff are allowed to enter the vault.

The building can hold 4.5 million types of seed and keeps them at a consistent temperature between 37.4 and 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds are stored there as a safety measure in case of crop failures or natural disasters, as the Arctic climate is naturally stable and unlikely to experience floods or heat waves that could harm the seeds.
